There’s going to be a “Grey’s Anatomy” spinoff, because we don’t cry nearly enough as it is over television

Taking a cue from Dick Wolf and his ever-expanding Chicago shows on NBC, ABC and Shondaland are teaming up to produce a Grey’s Anatomy spinoff following the lives of Seattle firefighters. ABC announced during its upfronts that the still-untitled spinoff was ordered straight to series, so expect this to land on our television sets soon.
The spinoff, which is being produced by Shonda Rhimes, Betsy Beers, and Stacy McKee — who will also write the series — will see its characters introduced during the upcoming fourteenth season of Grey’s Anatomy, which will serve as a backdoor pilot. If Grey’s history is an indication, Seattle firefighters and the Grey-Sloan doctors will be brought together by a horrible incident that will cause some serious turmoil in Seattle.
“No one can interweave the jeopardy firefighters face in the line of duty with the drama in their personal lives quite like Shonda [Rhimes], " ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey explained in a statement. "Grey’s signature Seattle setting is the perfect backdrop for this exciting spinoff."
The announcement of a new Shondaland series comes just after it was revealed that the next season of Scandal, its seventh, would be its last. The Kerry Washington-led show has been one of the most successful shows on ABC, so it’s not a big surprise that ABC is eager to get another Shonda show back on the air.
The Seattle firefighters series marks the *second* Grey’s spinoff, as Private Practice, which ran for six seasons on ABC, followed Kate Walsh’s Addison Montgomery as she moved from Seattle to Los Angeles. Private Practice also introduced viewers to Dr. Amelia Shepard (Caterina Scorsone), the little sister of McDreamy, Derek Shepard. Scorsone played the younger Dr. Shepard on both ABC medical series, but has been a series regular on Grey’s since the eleventh season of the series.
We can’t wait to see what this new spinoff looks like but we’ll have our tissues ready. As always, we have complete faith in Shonda.
