The “Wicked” movie has an official release date, and we already feel like we’re defying gravity

Seeing our favorite musicals become movies is always exciting, especially when that show is Wicked.

That’s right. The classic Wizard of Oz spinoff is gearing up to hit the big screen. Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda the Good Witch, will finally face off in front of the camera. We knew it was coming. And we knew it would be in December 2019. But we weren’t quite sure exactly when.

Now, we have the official news that Wicked will hit theaters December 20, 2019.

The original show opened in 2003 and featured powerhouse performers Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda, and Idina Menzel as Elphaba. Menzel won a Tony Award in 2004 for her portrayal. And the show has gone on to much success and fanfare for several years in a number of cities.

In the 15 years Wicked has been on stage, there have been over 5,000 performances. In addition to Menzel’s Tony, the show itself has received tons of nominations and awards. And, the cast album received a Grammy. It was also the fastest Broadway musical to hit $1 billion in sales.

Not too shabby.

The concept for Wicked was adapted from a book written in 1995 by Gregory Maguire titled Wicked: The Life and Times of Wicked Witch of the West. Stephen Daldry (who also did the chilling The Hours) will direct the film, and Marc Platt will serve as producer. Winnie Holzman and Stephen Schwartz, who worked on the musical version of Macguire’s book, will write the screenplay.

Universal finally confirmed movie rumors last June. So far no actors are confirmed. We think it would be amazing if Chenoweth and Menzel reunite for the roles. But we’ll be happy just seeing Elphaba and Glinda’s story come to life on the big screen, no matter who plays the iconic parts.
