The Weeknd isn’t releasing *that* song about Selena Gomez after all
Update, December 3rd, 9:30 a.m. ET: Just one week after The Weeknd reportedly registered the song name “Like Selena” with the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers website, it seems like he’s had a change of heart. As Entertainment Tonight reports, the song (100% about Selena Gomez) is no longer listed with the ASCAP. Abel, what happened?
Abel Tesfaye, aka The Weeknd, did drop two new songs in the last week: “Heartless” and “Blinding Lights.” And while fans have seen connections in the lyrics to ex-girlfriend Bella Hadid (and some maybe even to Gomez), for now, it seems the full ode to Selena has been scrapped. Of course, the removal of “Like Selena” doesn’t mean there won’t be other songs about his ex, so we’ll have to listen carefully to the whole album.
Original post, November 26th: The Weeknd (whose real name is Abel Tesfaye) is back on social media after taking some time away from the platform to build up excitement for a possible music drop. And, as we expected, the “Can’t Feel My Face” singer is about to drop something big—and it may or may not have to do with his ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez.
Now, let us clarify. The Weeknd is absolutely going to drop a song all about Gomez. We’re just not sure if it’s going to be the first drop of this new Weeknd season. According to E! News, The Weeknd recently registered a new song titled “Like Selena” on the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers website. So, yeah. A love ballad/sad-boy anthem is definitely happening.
Our guess is that The Weeknd isn’t going to come out of the gate with “Like Selena.” But judging by his one and only Instagram post, uploaded on November 25th, his new stuff is probably going to be pretty moody.
"The fall starts tomorrow night," he captioned the post, which appears to be a blurred picture of a man wearing thick-rimmed glasses.
The Weeknd and Gomez became an item in January 2017 and lasted for about 10 months. They ultimately decided to call things off due to conflicting schedules and both briefly went back to their ex-partners—Gomez to Justin Bieber and The Weeknd to Bella Hadid.
So, the fact that the “Starboy” singer is dropping a song about Selena two years after they split (and a full year after he released his 2018 album My Dear Melancholy, which was riddled with allusions to Gomez) is a bit surprising. Perhaps he’s had this song rattling in his brain since their breakup. Or, maybe Gomez made a lasting impression on him.
Once “Like Selena” is dropped, we’ll be analyzing the lyrics to figure out which explanation makes the most sense. Until then, we’re anxiously awaiting whatever “the fall” may be.
