Facebook is teaming up with MTV for a “reimagined” version of The Real World
According to The Verge, Facebook and MTV have teamed up to create the “reimagined” version of The Real World. The news was announced at MIPCOM in Cannes, France, and marks the first time that Facebook has attempted to bring a former cable show to Watch, which was launched in August 2017. Three new seasons of the classic show have been commissioned—set in Thailand, Mexico, and the U.S.—and they will premiere simultaneously in spring 2019.
"The Real World made history as the world’s first original reality show and trailblazing social experiment—and we’re thrilled to reboot the show for today’s audiences—representing and amplifying the real life, real people, real places and real social tensions of each country," Matthew Henick, Facebook's head of content planning and strategy, said in a statement to The Verge.
Engadget reports that Facebook will introduce interactive elements to the show. Viewers will be able to choose one of the show’s housemates prior to each season, and Facebook says there will be other chances for audience participation via Watch Party, Live, and Premieres. Further social aspects will be revealed later.
According to Variety, MTV Studios and Bunim/Murray Productions—which was behind the original show—will produce the revamped series. So far, it’s unclear how many episodes will be in each season, but Facebook reportedly plans to release segments of each episode ahead of its weekly airing.
We’re admittedly intrigued to see how the rebooted Real World turns out. If it’s anything like the original, we know we can count on some extremely watchable fly-on-the-wall TV.
