Guess who’s coming to Townsville? The all new ‘Powerpuff Girls’!

We have seen the future of cartoons and it looks a lot like… The Powerpuff Girls! We first learned that the show was going to get a reboot about a year ago, and we’re still one year out from the projected airing date. To hold us over, Cartoon Network has just announced the voice actresses behind the renewed crime-fighting team, along with some rad updated artwork.

For those who were not tapped into the most awesome cartoon on TV from 1998 to 2004, The Powerpuff Girls was all about three kickass girls who fought against villains like HIM and Mojo Jojo. Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup were not to be messed with, and the mayor of their hometown, Townsville, (voiced by Tom Kenny, who is coming back for the reboot) turned to them in times of trouble. Why? Because they had superpowers, naturally.

The show, created by Craig McCracken, became a cult hit while it was on air, and it still stands as a testament to the badassery of animated girl power. If you grew up in the ’80s and early ’90s, we don’t need to tell you that gender diversity in the cartoon crime-fighting arena was pretty much a non-entity. The Girls changed all that. The show won multiple awards, including two Emmys—and now a whole new generation of Cartoon Network viewers will have a chance to see these iconic heroes in action.

But there is one catch. The voices for the characters won’t be provided by the original actresses, but by three newcomers. Amanda Leighton, Kristen Li and Natalie Palamides have signed on to the series, which will be produced by Adventure Time’s Nick Jennings. (You might recognize the 22-year-old Leighton from The Fosters.)

As far as the cartoon girls themselves, they still look very much like they did back in the day. That’s the thing about cartoons: they don’t get old—especially not these girls.
