Don’t underestimate the power of an affordable facial bar soap in your skincare routine

We all have that one facial cleanser that we practically swear by, especially those amazeballs products that keep your face looking like an enchanting dewy goddess. But while foaming facial cleansers (especially the K-beauty ones!) definitely make the cleaning shindig a whole lot easier, it’s important to note that bar soap is having a major moment right now.

OK, so switching over to facial bar soap may seem like an overhyped millennial beauty fad you may have read and laughed about, but dermatologists and skin care experts are in agreeance that facial bar soap can be just as effective and gentle as a liquid cleanser, especially since most bar soaps tend to contain more natural ingredients.

“Bar soap is a perfectly fine way to cleanse the face,” Dr. Elizabeth Tanzi, Founder & Director of Capital Laser & Skin Care and Assistant Clinical Professor, Department of Dermatology at the George Washington University Medical Center, told HelloGiggles. She added:

“The key is to find one that works well for your skin type, so do your homework to find one with quality ingredients.

Unlike the nasty synthetic chemicals found in many liquid facial washes that can be extremely harsh, facial bar soaps are made with cold-pressed oils and can contain a pH level that’s way lower than most liquid washes.

“Foaming agents put into facial cleansers are surfactants and they are very drying to the skin,” says board-certified dermatologist Dr. Debra Jaliman to HelloGiggles. “These ingredients are usually sodium laurel sulfate or ammonium sodium lauryl sulfate. If you have sensitive skin, eczema, or dry skin, you might be better off using bar soap.”

But we won’t try to deny it. The best part about going #teambarsoap is that it’s way more affordable than buying foaming cleanser after foaming cleanser. Most bar soap products tend to be in a reasonable range, allowing you to splurge on those liquid lipsticks you have been eyeing.

“Bar soaps are also much more of a value than liquid soaps,” Tammie Umbel, founder of SheaTerra Organics, told HelloGiggles. “These products not only cost a fraction of the price but they also last several times longer.”

If you are finally starting to warm up to the bar soap trend, we’ve rounded up five different products that work for every skin type.
