YAAAS: The UK version of “The Office” is getting a Netflix movie spin-off
It’s been over a decade since the UK version of The Office ended, but now, we’ve officially received the fabulous news that we’ll be getting a movie spin-off all about the crazy antics of David Brent.
On Sirius XM’s “Opie with Jim Norton Show” yesterday, Ricky Gervais creator of both the UK and the U.S. series, revealed that Netflix recently purchased the rights to David Brent: Life On The Road.
“This is exciting news and this is top secret, so I’m going to say it now,” Ricky told the hosts. “Netflix has bought out the rest of the world again. Everyone is going to see it, which is great for me, because I’d rather 20 million people see it than half a million people see it in cinemas. . . because I want to do tours off the back of it.”
The spinoff, which will once again star Ricky, follows David as he goes after his ultimate dream. What dream is that, you may ask? Being a rockstar, obviously.
Back in 2012, Ricky explained to “CBS This Morning” that he purposely chose to give the show a brief life from 2001 to 2003. “It’s so intense, particularly when you do everything yourself, it’s not like there was a team of 20 writers and producers,” he said. “You put everything into it, and that was the first thing I did, and it’s sort of like a lifetime’s work really. I didn’t want to repeat myself, or water it down, so I just left it as it was, and I’ve never regretted that really. I miss it, but I’ve never regretted.”
We totally understand that, but we’re oh so happy it will be given new life in the form of a movie. We’re dreaming of the possibility of Steve Carell guest-starring as Michael Scott. Please, make it happen, Ricky.
