The new ‘Pee-Wee’ movie may drop straight to Netflix, because Netflix loves us
In case you haven’t heard the exciting news: there’s a brand new Pee-Wee Herman movie in the works and we are ALL kinds of excited. We can assume that the movie will be nothing short of a Pee-Wee fan’s dream — seeing as it’ll be produced by funny man Judd Apatow and starring Paul Reubens, naturally — and now we might not even have to trek to the theaters to see it. Rumor has it, the film will be released through Netflix.
If the rumors are true (the deal isn’t yet signed, but it does look like the rumors are true), Pee-Wee’s movie will join a growing number of productions that are skipping right over the normal distribution stage, and coming right into our living rooms (or OK, our beds because we’ll definitely be in bed in our pajamas watching it).
Now consider that House of Cards and Orange Is The New Black are undeniably two of the best TV shows right now, and they aren’t even available on an actual TV channel. With a Pee-Wee deal, Netflix is further establishing itself as an even huger (might not be a word, but whatevs) force to be reckoned with.
Also, oh gosh, then there’s the fact that Chelsea Handler’s new venture, will be Netflix’ first ever talk show! Netflix is becoming our go-to site for every, single, viewing, thing.
As silly as it might sound, this really could be the beginning of the next wave of entertainment distribution. While nothing will ever replace the feeling of seeing a blockbuster movie in a crowded theater, as more and more films (and shows!) struggle to find funding, the streaming route isn’t even the next best thing, it is the best thing.
So while 10 years ago we all might have turned our noses up at a movie that went “straight to DVD,” now the big thing is straight to streaming — nose turning, not included. Who could turn their nose up at a Pee-Wee reboot, anyway?
