A The Nanny reboot may be in the works, and yes, please

As we await the arrival of Sabrina the Teenage Witch’s dark Netflix reboot, revel in the Will & Grace revival, and watch the new Roseanne grasp at straws a spinoff after its tumultuous end, we’re turning our attention to a new potential ’90s reboot that may be headed to the small screen (emphasis on may). According to actress Fran Drescher, The Nanny could make a comeback.
The year 2018 marks the 25th anniversary of The Nanny’s 1993 premiere. ET.com caught up with Drescher on June 18th at Revolution, Broadway Sings for Pride’s Annual Charity Concert. Drescher, who played Fran Fine in the show, reflected on the series’ popularity.
"People really love that show," Drescher told ET. "It's unreal." And what of a series reboot? "We're talking about it. Peter and I are talking about it," Drescher said, referring to her ex-husband and the sitcom's co-creator, Peter Marc Jacob. "We're working on a very big project. It's going to be very exciting for the fans, but I'm not at liberty to announce it yet. But it's gonna be big."
Drescher has even thought about what her character would be up to 20 years after the series finale aired. She said that Fran most likely would have gotten involved in issues close to Fran Drescher’s heart, “from environmental issues, to health, to civil liberties,” she said. “That’s what I think Fran would be doing now — opening her big Queens mouth for the greater good.”
And no doubt Fran Fine’s eye for fashion would only get better with age.
After six seasons on the air, The Nanny ended with Fran marrying her former employer, Maxwell Sheffield, played by Charles Shaughnessy. Alongside Maxwell’s three children, whom Fran spent the majority of the series nannying, Fran and Maxwell start a family of their own.
“The thing is our show would be the same characters 20 years later. We can’t just pick up where we left off,” Drescher noted. “But in a way, that could be really good because the show can have a whole fresh bend to it.”
If ABC is in need of a replacement once Roseanne officially ends, Drescher isn’t “mad at that suggestion” that The Nanny could take its place. “I mean, I’m waiting to get the call,” she told ET (The Nanny originally aired on CBS…but we see no reason it can’t make the jump).
Make the call, ABC (or any network, for that matter). We need to see what Fran and the rest of our beloved The Nanny characters are up to.
