The Mall of America is doing something it’s never done, and everyone is cheering
When you’re driving down to meet relatives for your Thanksgiving feast, you might see two things — one, open stores. And two, customers camped outside of big retailers to form a Black Friday line. It’s a bummer. Thanksgiving is all about food, merriment, and family, so it’s upsetting when companies would rather squeeze a few dollars from you than let their employees celebrate. So, that’s why everyone is cheering for the Mall of America, who (finally) decided that this year will be the first they close for the Thanksgiving.
The Mall of America, located in Bloomington, Minnesota, is still known as the world’s biggest — and even after facing the recession, they’re still thriving. Even though there are a ton of different stores and activities inside, the big bosses are trying their hardest to close as many parts of the mall down as possible — even their movie theaters, and Nickelodeon Universe.
"We’ve been talking about this for months, looking at the numbers, looking at the pros and the cons, mentioned Jill Renslow, the senior vice president of marketing and business development at the mall, to The Star Tribune. “We’re excited to give this day back to our employees so they can celebrate with their families."
This is a huge and powerful move, and definitely a step in the right direction. Reports do mention that certain people will still have to be there — namely, security guards — but giving the option to close for approximately 15,000 mall workers is something to celebrate.
Of course, people throughout America are quite excited about it.
