Everything we know about ‘The Incredibles 2’ (including when it’s coming to theaters!)

The only thing better than a brand new Pixar movie is a sequel to a Pixar movie. The characters have already been explained, we’re already completely immersed in their Pixar world, and old (and some new) favorites can return to our lives. These are all reasons why we’re desperate for any sort of information about Pixar’s upcoming Incredibles 2. But just like the Parr Family’s double-identity, information about Incredibles 2 is largely kept under wraps.

The movie has been in the works for about a year now, but everything has been super hush-hush. Its poster was revealed at this year’s D23 expo, but literally nothing else. Now, we have a tiny bit of information, with Disney officially announcing its release date: June 21st, 2019!

Not like that’s four years away or anything. These movies take time, and you can’t rush art, so we get the long wait. But that’s still like, really, really, very far away. Elastigirl can’t even reach that far. And the date could still change between now, and four years from now. Settle in, because we’re going to be waiting for a while.

Actually, it’s like that scene in The Incredibles where Bob asks the little kid on the tricycle, “what are you waiting for?” and the kid replies, “I don’t know! Something amazing, I guess.” That’s all of us on the tricycle.

SO, though we don’t have much to go on, we can read between the secret-Pixar lines and figure out a few other things about the movie while we wait.

Brad Bird is still in charge

Brad Bird helmed the first Incredibles, and he’s back for the second. In between now and then, he went on to do Ratatouille, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, and Tomorrowland. And don’t forget his first feature-length animated movie, The Iron Giant. He clearly knows his way around a superb story, and we have total faith in him to once again deliver with the Incredibles.

He recently spoke with Collider, and mentioned that he’s “three-quarters through the script.” That’s not bad!

The Incredibles 2 has to be completely different

Bird recognizes that there are “400 billion” superhero movies right now and “there’s a new… movie every two weeks.” While The Incredibles 2 will certainly have good company, the filmmakers are being sure not to repeat anything that’s already been done.

“What you don’t want to do is trot over the same turf in the same way everyone else is,” Bird explained to Collider, “So we’re trying to keep it focused in the area that our film was, which was a little bit more about characters and relationships and stuff like that, and see where that takes us.”

Our favorites will probably return

How many times have you yelled “WHERE IS MY SUPER SUIT?” even though you probably don’t have a supersuit to suit-up into? According to Samuel L. Jackson, Frozone will return to once again put on his supersuit. If he can find it.

But then maybe not

When asked if all the original characters will return for the movie, Bird told IGN, he “[doesn’t] like to talk about anything,” and adds, “no unwrapping.” So we’re just going to have to wait and see what’s inside this big Incredibles present.

The poster looks really cool

GET IT the I (or, stylized i) now has two! So clever.

Uh, that’s all we know

Talk about something top secret. Bird is spilling no other details. Will Jack-Jack be more than a toddler this time? Is Edna Mode still in charge of their wardrobe? What are they going to have to save this time? We’ll find all of that out…in about 1351 days. Not that I counted.
