The Hate U Give trailer just dropped, and its timely message will give you chills

The powerful trailer for The Hate U Give is here, and it could not be more timely. The film, based on the 2017 bestseller by Angie Thomas, stars Amandla Stenberg as a high school student dealing with the tragic death of her friend when he is shot and killed by police.

Per the full blurb from Twentieth Century Fox Film:

“Starr Carter is constantly switching between two worlds: the poor, mostly black, neighborhood where she lives and the rich, mostly white, prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Now, facing pressures from all sides of the community, Starr must find her voice and stand up for what’s right.”

Stenberg shines in the starring role and is surrounding by an A-list supporting cast that includes: Regina Hall, Issa Rae, Common, Anthony Mackie, KJ Apa, and Sabrina Carpenter.

While The Hate U Give is based on a YA novel, this content should be required viewing for all ages.

YouTuber Kian Lawley originally played the role of Stenberg’s boyfriend, but when a racist video he filmed three or four years came to light earlier this year, Twentieth Century Fox Film took immediate action and fired him. KJ Apa has replaced him in the film.

Besides being a rising star in Hollywood, Stenberg is the kind of woke, progressive, and thoughtful Gen Z human that gives us all hope for the future. She shared the trailer on Instagram and wrote: “So excited and blessed to share this with u. This book arrested my heart and gave me solace. Thank you for your blessing [Angie Thomas], we hope we’ll make you proud!”

The Hate U Give arrives in theaters on October 19th, 2018.
