You will definitely cry during “The Glass Castle” — because Max Greenfield cried a lot

Based on a memoir of the same name by Jeannette Walls, The Glass Castle tells the story of a young girl coming of age while being raised by her nonconformist parents — her eccentric artist mother Rose Mary (Naomi Watts) and alcoholic father Rex (Woody Harrelson). Brie Larson plays the older version of Jeannette, with Max Greenfield as her fiancé David.

The Glass Castle is as heartbreaking as it is heartwarming, and accordingly, it sent Greenfield into tears.

The New Girl actor became especially emotional during a scene in which a young Jeannette learns to see the beauty in a bad burn on her stomach.

"When I first read the script, the moment where I was like, 'Ugh,' when I read it and started crying was the scene — they cut to it twice, and they revisit it later in the movie — where Woody is talking to the youngest version of Jeanette by the campfire," Greenfield told HelloGiggles.

“They revisit it at the end,” he continued. “And he’s asking her to show him her scars, and [asks] how do you feel about these?”

The scenes really struck a chord with him, as he’s the father to a young daughter himself.

"She's probably about the same age as my daughter, maybe a little bit younger. When I read it I got really emotional. When I saw it, I lost my mind."

And he’s not exaggerating, not even a bit.

“It was one of those moments where I was like, ‘Um, here goes this.’ And I started crying really badly. I thought I was going to pull it together, and then I didn’t…It was one of those things where I was like, ‘Wow, I’ve been crying badly for 20 minutes now.’”

The Glass Castle is now in theaters and from what Greenfield has to say, you might want to bring a box of tissues with you when you see it.
