The dark genius behind @SoSadToday has finally revealed herself

In the age where anonymity is as hard to come by as a day without news of a Kardashian, @SoSadToday, the neurotic voice of the Internet, has managed to remain cloaked in mystery for years.

But no longer! After three years, the man behind the mask has revealed himself – and he’s actually a she.

@SoSadToday is known for dark, ace tweets, like:

So who is the dark brain behind these pearls of Twitter wisdom? Her name is Melissa Broder. She is already a published author and poet, and is coming out with a new book of personal essays next March, appropriately titled, So Sad Today. As Broder toldRolling Stone the book, will be about, “‘Unrequited love, being afraid of your own emotions, fear of death and what is life?’ Like, what is this? I’m still perplexed.”

According to Paper, her publisher stipulated that as part of the book’s release, Broder had to reveal her true identity.

The Twitter account @SoSadToday, which has more than 200,000 followers, including celebrities like Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus, came out of Broder battling some of her own personal demons and has clearly hit a nerve with Twitter users.

“It was born out of a really hard time in my life,” she told Rolling Stone in an interview “As more teens started following it, it developed into more of a character.”

Broder told Rolling Stone that her book, similar to her Twitter account, will toe the line between satire, comedy, dark humor, and actual pain.

She explains to the magazine: “I live in L.A., and when I’m on the beach there’s often that expectation to be happy, and then you judge your feelings, ’cause you’re like, ‘What’s wrong with me? Why am I not? It’s beautiful, I should be.’ So in that way, maybe it is a beach read, if you’re having an existential crisis on the beach.”

Despite her forthcoming book, Broder said she plans to keep up the @SoSadToday Twitter account indefinitely.

“I’m clean and sober, and have been for 10 years. Twitter is one of my last remaining drugs, and I refuse to give everything up. I need the high, I need the fantasy, and I need the escape.”

Broder’s first tweet from her personal account since the announcement of her alter-ego reads as follows:

Not that we see @melissabroder and @SoSadToday side-by-side the similarities are evident. Lowercase. Lack of punctuation. And a peppering of existential questions that we wish we had the answers to.
