This week’s mermaid would gladly join you on an egg hunt (if she, uh, had legs)
Ahoy, humans!
This week’s mermaid is all about one of the sweetest traditions of the year.
She’s the Easter Mermaid!
Since we love to know about the origin of legends and the meaning behind traditions passed down over the years, here are a few facts about why we celebrate Easter (even if we’re not religious) and look for baskets full of candy:
? Spring has always symbolized new life and rebirth, which ties it to Jesus’ resurrection.
? Why an Easter bunny? Well, it’s all thanks to the Teutonic deity Eostra — who was the goddess of spring and fertility. Feasts were held in her honor on the Vernal Equinox, and her symbol was the rabbit (who lays eggs!).
? The first Easter Bunny legend was documented in the 1500s, and brought to America in the 1700s. It all started with making nets for the rabbit to lay its eggs in, which then became the baskets full of eggs containing candy that we know and love today.
The point is we love Easter and all the wonderful candy it brings <3.
Hoping you hop your way back next week!
