The Coffee Table with Sophie Jaffe
Amanda and I love getting to know people and what their metaphorical cup of coffee is–what wakes them up, excites them, and keeps them going. Our interview series, The Coffee Table, gives us that inspirational buzz and the opportunity to share it with others!
This week’s coffee table guest might sound familiar as I’ve raved about her superfood powders in a previous item of the day post. A wife, mother, and business owner, this lady is balancing it all. Please give a healthy hello to Los Angeles raw food nutritionist and chef:
Currently Brewing
I’m ALWAYS brewing something! Right now I am working on getting my superfood products into Whole Foods and it’s in the final stages of that LONG process. It will be such a relief when they are on the shelves!!!!
Favorite Drink
Fave coffee: extra dry cappuccino with almond milk and a sprinkle of cinnamon and 1 tsp Cacao Magic.
Fave drink: Green Dream smoothie with all the kale my blender will allow!
It’s the Little Things
1. My one & three year old boys. Their faces when they sleep, laugh & sit pensively. My toddler’s voice.
2. A deep yoga practice, candlelit, followed by a cup of tea.
3. Writing in my journal, something I’ve done since I was 6 years old. (actually having the time to do so and then doing it!)
My Coffee Table Our coffee table was my husband’s that his mother bought him years ago. It’s one of the last things that has remained after we’ve replaced things throughout the years and as our style has merged. Each time I look at it I’m reminded of when we first met at UCLA, practically two kids and almost a decade ago. The butterflies even come back! It’s amazing how our bodies can do that. I’m excited to replace it with something thats “ours” in the future, but we probably won’t do that until we buy a house together. Green Dream + Cacao Magic. Two of my superfood blends. I add them to EVERYTHING and always have a small bag in my gym bag and purse. I put them in juices, smoothies, oats, desserts, coffee, you name it. Keeps me feeling my best physically & energetically. (balances hormones, too!)
Parenting book– As I said, I have two sweet boys, and I’m always looking for spiritual, heartfelt ways to raise them. I lead my life from an open heart so I’m really trying to do the same in parenting. Some days it seems almost impossible but this book has really helped in moments of insanity.
Words of Wisdom
“Everything in moderation, including moderation.”
I love this for multiple reasons. My whole “philosophie” is all about balance. Food, exercise, alcohol, alone time, socializing, excess, travel, soul, spirit, etc. It’s what I preach all day and work really hard to be a living example. My husband is an addiction researcher who has an outpatient treatment center and teaches his clients how to moderate their addictions, especially with alcohol. He doesn’t believe in the end all be all “once you’re an addict, always an addict.” This quote reminds me that most days are best being balanced, but that sometimes it’s fun to let go and just indulge.
These are faves too:
“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” –Martin Luther King, Jr.
“Every thought you produce, anything you say, any action you do, it bears your signature.” —Thich Nhat Hanh
“Be soft. Do not let the world make you hard. Do not let the pain make you hate. Do not let the bitterness steal your sweetness. Take pride that even though the rest of the world may disagree, you still believe it to be a beautiful place.” -Kurt Vonnegut Check out more coffee table interviews: top left, top right, bottom left, bottom right.
