The trailer for “The Circle” starring Emma Watson looks like it could be as good as the book

In an age of endless technological improvements to society, human capital and quality of life, can anything go wrong?

Weeeellll, hold that thought. The trailer for The Circle with Emma Watson, based on Dave Eggers’ 2013 novel of the same name, follows Watson as she begins working at a powerful internet company that aims to make the world a better place, only to learn of its dark side. Tom Hanks plays a colloquial, personable, Steve Jobs-like father figure at the top of the company.

In the trailer, Tom Hanks gives a TED-talk Keynote speech to a large audience, laying out his plans for a perfect future, and its perfect human.

“I am a believer in the perfectibility of human beings,” he says, as we see a utopia of sorts in which people seem exceptionally happy and ever productive.

John Boyega stars alongside Watson and Hanks, with Karen Gillan, Patton Oswalt and Bill Paxton taking supporting roles.

Directed by James Ponsoldt of Smashed, The Spectacular Now and The End Of The Tour, The Circle hits theaters on April 28th, 2017. We’re eager to watch it, not just for entertainment’s sake, but also as a welcome warning for how not to evolve.
