Hannah and Tyler C.’s Bachelorette date got real about consent, and our feminist hearts are swooning

Hannah has proven to be the sex-positive Bachelorette we’ve needed. On the episode last night, June 16th, she shut down Luke P. after he tried to shame her sex life with an eloquent response that included the now-iconic line, “I have had sex, and Jesus still loves me.” She made windmills go viral after exclaiming that she had sex in one…twice. And on her date with fan-favorite Tyler C., Hannah spoke out about consent and respect. Tyler, for his part, seemed to really hear her.

After a super-steamy massage date together, it came as a surprise to viewers everywhere when Hannah told Tyler she didn’t want to have sex during their fantasy suite date. (For the unimitated, these are the overnight, cameras-off, sex-insinuated dates of the season.)

“There is a concern for me about our physical relationship. It is a huge part of our relationship. I am just so captivated about being around you, you holding me and kissing me—I just want that. I do, Hannah told Tyler. “So I just have to kind of reset myself sometimes and think, ‘Okay, that’s great. You know that that’s there, but it has to be more.’

Hannah continued by saying that she did want to have the overnight date, but that she wanted to focus on talking and not sex.

Viewers across the country (and social media) swooned when Tyler gave the best response.

“Tonight, the fantasy suites, it has the connotation of sex. For me, it’s way more than that. I just want to be with you and have that time with you, he said. “You have to really love and respect and honor each other’s boundaries. And I would never press you or pressure you at all. I want you to be 100% comfortable and confident in whatever we do together.

According to Hannah, he lived what he said about boundaries and consent, too. The next morning when the cameras were back on, the Bachelorette said to Tyler, “You did not allow it to go further and there’s a time for that, and it’s probably the hottest thing. It probably made me want to do more.” We hear you, Hannah.

She continued in her confessional interview, where she said Tyler was “the most respectful man I’ve ever been with. Ever.”

As much as we love this show, let’s be honest: The Bachelor and The Bachelorette haven’t always shown the paragon of modern, feminist relationships. So this upfront talk of boundaries had fans falling (even more) in love with Tyler. Even Hannah doubled down on her feelings about Tyler on Twitter during the episode.

We’re crossing all our fingers and toes Hannah chooses Tyler because she deserves a man who understands respect and consent. (We’re side-eyeing you, Luke.)
