The 2018 Oscars made the envelope text so gigantic you cannot screw up this time

Last year’s infamous Oscar blooper involving announcing the wrong film for Best Picture is still on the forefront of everyone’s mind as they watch the 2018 Oscars, and it looks like this year the Academy isn’t taking any chances.

Trayvon Free, who writes for Full Frontal With Samantha Bee, made a hilarious observation on Twitter when he tweeted, “the #Oscars are making sure you know you have the right envelope this year,” capturing a picture of the envelope labeled “Costume Design.”

Viewers of this year’s awards ceremony noticed that the envelope text this year is extra-large. Twitter users responded with hilarious memes, with one reading “and the winner is…Lady Bird…Whoops I mean Get Out.”

At the 2017 Oscars, Bonnie and Clyde actors Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway announced the Best Picture winner. However one of the accountants from the firm responsible for counting the Academy’s votes, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), grabbed the wrong envelope, handing Beatty and Dunaway the envelope for Best Actress instead of Best Picture.

This resulted in one of the Academy’s biggest gaffes to date with La La Land being announced as Best Picture Winner, before the film’s producers were interrupted mid-acceptance speech to be told that, instead, Moonlight was the correct Best Picture winner. As can be expected, the Moonlight cast was simultaneously shocked and ecstatic, while the La La Land cast was understandably confused.

In December 2017, PwC introduced new rules to prevent a future mix-up, which involves the accountants confirming that each celebrity presenter is handed the correct envelope and a third PwC employee will be on standby in the show’s control room with the full list of winners. Beatty and Dunaway will also be announcing this year’s 2018 Best Picture winner

Here’s hoping everyone will be wearing their reading glasses this year, not that they’ll need them.
