The “13 Reasons Why” star reveals what Selena Gomez said that convinced her to finally join Instagram

People have varying reasons for why they use (or don’t use) social media. For 13 Reasons Why star Katherine Langford, Instagram wasn’t something she was really feeling — at first.

Speaking with The Last Magazine, the actress said she had little interest in being part of the social media world because she “wanted to be an actor purely for the acting work and not the fame aspect.

"I have never been attracted to increasing my popularity or hireability by being on Instagram," she added.

The person who changed her mind? Executive Producer of 13 Reasons Why Selena Gomez, who pointed out how fans would react to Langford’s presence on Instagram.

"Selena pointed out that the show is targeting young adults like me and that [social media] is a good medium to talk directly with those who relate to my character, Hannah," she said.

We love this reasoning, and it’s 100 percent the truth. We first and foremost applaud anyone for choosing to stay off of social media for any reason they deem worthy whatsoever, as it’s a completely personal choice, but we commend Langford just as wholeheartedly for choosing to be a little closer to her fans than she may have been able to otherwise, especially given the show’s subject matter. The power of technology is a beautiful thing.

Plus, we totally understand why Langford would heed Gomez’s advice. In a March interview, the young actress gushed to the Toronto Sun over how Gomez is “so human,” and how talking to her “just feels like a normal conversation.”

"We went and had dinner the other night, and it was like she's just another girl in the room," she said of the hugely popular actress and singer. "It's cool when you get to that point."

Langford’s Instagram account has only been around for a couple of years and only became public and more active recently, but she already has over a million and a half followers — thanks, no doubt, to her amazing, heartstring-pulling portrayal of Hannah in the wildly successful Netflix show.

We’re glad this budding superstar (sorry, girl — you’re going to be huge, we know it) is making herself a little more vulnerable to her fanbase, and we’ll follow her on any and all social media channels she decides to grace with her presence!
