We totally support these chain stores shutting their doors on Thanksgiving Day
In recent years, Black Friday has gone from a day when you might get a good deal on a new TV, to an all-out shopping fiasco starting almost immediately after the Thanksgiving meal. While I have never gone myself (I need to recuperate after stuffing myself on cranberry sauce, thank you very much!), even I have noted that the shopping madness has only increased over time. We’ve moved from 6am doorbuster deals, to folks camping outside of Best Buy at 3pm on Thanksgiving Day.
Shoppers aside, the steadily transitioning start-time of this tradition has a heavy impact on those who work at the stores. If stores are open on Thanksgiving Day for shoppers to get a kickstart on their Black Friday shopping, it means that many employees have to miss out on a holiday with family in order to work those (very undesirable shifts). Thankfully, more and more chain stores are putting their employees needs first and shuttering their doors on Thanksgiving Day. Even better, some stores are granting their employees paid time-off.
Our beloved H&M, for instance, just announced that they won’t be opening this Thanksgiving Day. No panic please, only appreciation. Plus, if you really need to shop over the long-weekend, you can update your wardrobe on Friday.
Similarly, REI recently announced that they would stay closed on Thanksgiving as well as Black Friday, showing appreciation for their employees by giving them paid time-off and encouraging them (and their customers) to instead spend the day in the great outdoors. They’ve even started a hashtag movement, #OptOutside. REI, we are definitely crushing on you a bit.
Other stores that won’t be opening on Thanksgiving include Costco, Barnes & Noble, GameStop, Staples, Marshalls, BJ’s, T.J. Maxx, HomeGoods, Nordstrom, Harbor Freight, Jo-Ann Stores, DSW, Crate and Barrel, Mattress Firm, Von Maur, At Home, Burlington Coat Factory, Patagonia, Sam’s Club, Pier 1 Imports, A.C. Moore, Sierra Trading Post, Half Price Books, Home Depot and Sur La Table.
We totally support the stores choosing to close up shop for the holiday, especially those who are treating their employees to paid time-off. Plus, if you really find yourself needing to spend some cash after chowing down, well, that’s what online shopping is for.
