TGIF shows might be getting reboots, and our ’90s-loving hearts can’t handle it
As most nostalgia-filled ’90s kids will tell you, staying up on Friday nights to catch ABC’s TGIF lineup was one of the highlights of the week. From Steve Urkel‘s shenanigans to Sabrina Spellman’s magical misadventures, this block of TV never failed to entertain. And soon, we might be able to relive the sitcoms of our youth with reboots of some of these classic TGIF comedies.
According to Deadline, WarnerMedia is considering reboots of these ’90s sitcoms: Family Matters, Perfect Strangers, Step by Step, and Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper. Show revivals would be produced as content for WarnerMedia’s forthcoming streaming service. But before you get too excited, it’s important to note that nothing has been confirmed. Executives at WarnerMedia are reportedly in exploratory talks, and while Deadline states that “there is interest,” it’s not clear which reboots—if any—will see the light of day.
If rebooted, the TGIF comedies will be the latest in a string of ’90s sitcoms to get the modern treatment. E! News notes that Fuller House, a reboot of Full House (another TGIF show), will enter its fifth and final season in the fall of 2019. The Boy Meets World spinoff Girl Meets World ran for three seasons on the Disney Channel. Sabrina the Teenage Witch got a much different, darker revival on Netflix, as The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, starring Kiernan Shipka.
We’re keeping our fingers crossed that more of our favorite ’90s shows will be coming back to TV. Maybe a Step by Step revival with feminist Dana’s own blended family? Checking in with Steve Urkel’s alter-ego Stefan Urquelle? If the TGIF reboots don’t work out, we have some ideas for what they should bring back next.
