Welcome to This Week’s Playlist, where we look to current events for some melodic curation inspiration. Tune in every Friday for a mix of news, commentary, and of course, music.

It’s here, it’s here; the air feels freer and full of joy. Why is this the case? What sparkle flows through the atmosphere and lights up the inside of your heart? Why, it’s none other than the uplift of summer, which feels like it’s already here — yet, the official beginning of the season is this Sunday, the summer solstice, aka the longest stretch of daylight of the year.

With that in mind, we’ve put together a playlist all about the sun (a perfect complement, perhaps, to this one), which doubles as an ode to everything that comes with endless light and long nights: Fun, freedom, friendship, love, loneliness, and the kind of nostalgic dreaming that takes place in such weather. We hope everybody takes their free time and gets some sunlight this solstice and through the rest of the season, but even if you’re stuck inside, this playlist will bring the light to you, wherever you are and whatever you’re doing.
