Luna Lovegood’s Muggle alter ego, British actress Evanna Lynch, recently dropped a huge piece of behind-the-scenes info at a fan expo in Australia. It has to do with Rolf Scamander. Huh? What? I thought Rolf was the guy in The Sound of Music. Well, yes, sort of, but Rolf Scamander is the grandson of Newt Scamander, the author of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. And, more importantly, he’s Luna Lovegood’s husband.

Maybe it’s difficult to remember good ol’ Rolf because he never joined Harry and the gang in the books while they’re at Hogwarts; he’s only mentioned in later reveals from J.K. Rowling as Luna’s husband. He also didn’t make it into the films, but – here’s the scoop – he almost did.

Remember when Harry, Hermione, and Ron visit Luna’s dad, Xenophilous, and he tells them about the Deathly Hallows? Hermione realizes that the story of their origin, The Tale of the Three Brothers, is in the book that Dumbledore left her in his will, The Tales of Beedle the Bard, and she reads the fable aloud while Mr. Lovegood calls the Ministry of Magic to report the trio. It’s all coming back to you now, right?

Evanna revealed that when J.K. Rowling was working on the movie adaptation, she considered having Rolf Scamander tell the story. The author apparently spent a long time agonizing over whether to include Rolf in the film, and sent frantic texts to Evanna saying, “He’s in, he’s out, he’s in, sorry, he’s out.” Woah. That scene would have been completely, totally different. Would Harry, Ron and Hermione have met Rolf in the flesh? Would his narration have been explained another way? We’ll probably never know.

Eventually, J.K. Rowling decided that Hermione was the best choice, so it’s Emma Watson who narrates the brothers’ tale in The Deathly Hallows, Part Two.

To be honest, it would have been hard to get to know Rolf as a character in such a short amount of time, but, on the other hand, it would’ve been cool to see the dude that Luna marries! Evanna didn’t elaborate any more about Rolf, but if he showed up at Luna’s dad’s house, it would mean that he knew the family long before tying the knot with our favorite Quibbler fan and nargle-spotter.

According to Harry Potter Wiki, Rolf is a Chief Consulting Magizoologist to the Daily Prophet, and was mentioned in the 2014 World Quidditch Cup Daily Prophet article that used to be posted on Pottermore. Sadly, that story is nowhere to be found on the site since the redesign, but maybe Rolf and Luna will appear in future short stories by J.K. Rowling, the greatest sorceress of them all.
