Welcome to This Week’s Playlist, where we look to current events for some melodic curation inspiration. Tune in every Monday for a mix of news, commentary, and of course, music.

Growing up, my favorite non-Halloween holiday was always Earth Day — one year, my grade school gave everyone baby trees, and one of my fondest (and saddest) memories was watching it grow up among the native forest around my childhood home, and then parting from it after we moved. The experience kicked off my love of plant life and awareness of humanity’s relationship with our planet, which are still going (or should I say, growing) strong.

We’d hope that everybody recycles regularly and uses resources like water and electricity responsibly, but Earth Day is an annual reminder that hey, we’re all connected by the very foundation of our creations, needs, and dreams: The Earth we stand on, and which houses the whole of our society (at least, until we figure out how to get to Mars). In honor of the occasion, here’s a playlist filled with songs that celebrate our Pale Blue Dot, directly about Mother Nature or inspired by her bounty.
