Teen posts four pics to remind all women that they can wear whatever they want

19-year-old Sara Petty refuses to let anyone tell her how to dress based on her body type. And she wants to empower us all to do the same.

On March 8th, Sara took to Twitter to fight body shame after she came across a series of tweets telling those over 200 pounds how to dress. So, like the badass she is, the college student took a screenshot of these tweets, did the opposite of what they said to do, snapped a pic of the results, and posted her selfies alongside the messages of body shame.

One message reads, “I’m sorry but if you’re like 200 pounds you shouldn’t be wearing a crop top …” In response, Sara beautifully rocked a crop trop and proved otherwise. Other tweets state that those of a certain size also shouldn’t wear leggings, or booty shorts, or even a bikini. But don’t worry – Sara shut them each down with selfies that are equally fierce and empowering.

“Girls: Wear whatever the hell you want,” writes Sara, making us slow clap in solidarity. This message has been retweeted over 67,000 times and received more than 78,000 likes. In addition to her initial tweet, Sara also took a moment to remind us that all of the body shaming comments she screenshotted were, in fact, posted by other women.

“Also- all of those tweets came from WOMEN,” Sara asserts. “Girls, stop tearing other girls down. Empower one another!!” Though we never stopped, we’re just gonna keep slow clapping. According to Seventeen, Sara revealed, “The post helped me become a little bit more OK with seeing that number on the scale, and I hoped that it would help other girls, too. I hope that my post moved us just one step closer to being a society where girls can wear what they please without being afraid of ridicule.”

Besides reminding us that we can (and should) do what makes us happy in the face of body shame, Sara also reaffirmed the fact that we should all be building each other up – not tearing each other down. Let’s work to spread body positivity instead.
