Prepare Your hearts: There’s a TEEN ‘Doctor Who’ spin-off on the way
Back in 1963, the first episode of the sci-fi series Doctor Who showed The Doctor’s granddaughter at Coal Hill School. Since then, the school has been featured in several episodes and has become a recurring location for action. Clara Oswald, The Doctor’s current companion, works there and even had a brief romance with fellow teacher Danny Pink. Now, teen (and some adult) Doctor Who fans can watch the Whoniverse continue to grow as they witness all the creepy things that go down at Coal Hill.
BBC Three recently announced that Coal Hill will have its own Doctor Who spinoff named Class. The series, which is expected to air sometime in 2016, has popular Young Adult (YA) author Patrick Ness as the showrunner and will consists of 8 45-minute episodes. Doctor Who showrunner, Steven Moffat, will executive produce the show and couldn’t contain his excitement about Class.
“No one has documented the dark and exhilarating world of the teenager like Patrick Ness, and now we’re bringing his brilliant storytelling into ‘Doctor Who.’ This is growing up modern Britain – but with monsters!”
The show has been described as a mashup of ’90s series Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The Hunger Games and will introduce a ton of new characters and villains to viewers. Patrick Ness, who has written six bestselling books aimed at teens, is understandably excited about making the leap over to TV with his first series.
“I’m astounded and thrilled to be entering the Doctor Who universe, which is as vast as time and space itself,” said Ness. “There’s so much room there for all kinds of amazing stories, and to work with Steven Moffat and Brian Minchin to find a place to tell one of my own has been an absolute joy. I can’t wait for people to meet the heroes of ‘Class,’ to meet the all-new villains and aliens, to remember that the horrors of the darkest corners of existence are just about on par with having to pass your A-Levels.”
Fans are already speculating about who will appear on the show. Will The Doctor swoop in to save the day? And, will Coal Hill student Courtney Woods, who traveled with the Twelfth Doctor and Clara, be a part of the cast? While those two have not been ruled out of appearing, Patrick Ness took to Twitter to confirm that Clara will NOT be a part of the Class cast.
Two previous Doctor Who spinoffs, The Sarah Jane Adventures and Torchwood, were both successful during their runs, so we can expect lots of adventure and aliens on Class!
