This teen brought his terminally ill grandma to prom

Get the tissues ready, readers. This one is going to pull on your heartstrings. A 17-year-old Junior at Stafford High School in Fredericksburg, Virginia brought his terminally ill grandmother to prom. Stephen Vigil is doing all he can to give his grandma, Julia Jarman, some of the best memories of her life in the short time she has left.

Vigil gifted the prom invitation to Jarman for her 92nd birthday. Having never attended any of her own proms, Jarman went all out for this special event. According to the Freelance Star, Jarman bought a blue dress to match her grandson’s vest and bowtie.

She also wore a rose corsage and got her hair cut and styled for the occasion.

Vigil had to request special permission from the school administration. Normally, students are not allowed to bring guests to the prom who are over 20. But given the circumstance, the administration were more than happy to oblige.

Jarman was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer earlier this year, and doctors are predicting she only has a few more months to live. With that in mind, Vigil is working hard to make those months incredible, including day trips, lunch dates, and with help from the Dream Foundation, a week vacation to Florida.

The high school staff was incredible during the event. Principal Joe Lewis gave Vigil and Jarman a special table and decked Jarman out in a crown and silver sash. The Freelance Star reports there wasn’t a dry eye in the house and silence took over the room when Vigil and Jarman arrived.

Having lost his father when he was 8, Vigil isn’t looking forward to losing another person whom he’s so close with. But he’s doing the best he can to keep himself busy with school activities and with spending time with Jarman.

Vigil, you are a standout teenager. This is a bittersweet time for sure. But we’re positive your grandmother is appreciating every minute of the time you spend with her!
