This teen boy got Instagram famous because of his campaign encouraging teen boys to support their female classmates
That embarrassing moment when you realize that your period has hit you and you’re not at all prepared might soon be a thing of the past, thanks to teen Jose Garcia who’s started a social media movement. After posting a photo to Instagram, his words about supporting women and their bodies went viral:
He calls for men to carry around a couple pads or tampons so they can be a resource to women who are stuck in a jam. Jose was inspired to spread this message after moving to his high school in Miami and witnessing, first hand, the struggles of his female classmates whenever their times of the month came around:
But his mission extends beyond these simple day-to-day acts of kindness. He wants to end the stigma about periods in general. He says, “I also believe that asking for a pad or a tampon shouldn’t be such a taboo thing to boys. It’s a natural thing that happens to women.”
For the most part, his words have been met with overwhelming praise, especially from women. He’s been getting attention on Twitter, Tumblr and Instagram, and has even gathered his own group of fan girls.
The guys, however, have been trickier.
But Jose, who calls himself a feminist, has simply brushed these comments away. After all, this is what his message has been all about: women’s bodies aren’t a source of shame, and he’ll continue to stand up for them no matter what.
