This brilliant video about tea and sexual consent is going viral
Following the six months’ sentencing for Stanford swim team rapist Brock Turner, the entire country is embroiled in an important discussion about sexual assault, consent and justice.
For anyone who still isn’t getting it, this “Tea and Consent” video created by the Thames Valley Police in the UK explains “yes means yes” in the simplest of terms: comparing sexual consent to consent for brewing someone a cup of tea. See, if you offered someone tea and they didn’t want it, would you force them to drink it? No, you wouldn’t, because that’s ridiculous. Well, the same goes for sex.
“If you’re still struggling with consent, just imagine instead of initiating sex, you’re making them a cup of tea,” the video explains. “If they say ‘No thank you,’ then don’t make them tea. At all.”
The police video isn’t new—it was first uploaded last November—but it’s been making the rounds on the internet this week for unfortunately covering very topical subject. It’s lighthearted and even humorous at times, but it’s rooted in truth—one that, sadly, some people still do not comprehend or respect.
Give it a watch and send it to a friend. It’s a metaphor that everyone should understand. You would never force someone to drink tea, so you shouldn’t force anyone into sexual activity. Ever. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=
