Taylor Swift just made the smartest purchase on the Internet

You might love Taylor Swift for her deeply catchy songs, her tendency for celebrating and supporting her best female friends, or her needlepoint skills, but it’s time to tip your hat to how shrewd a businesswoman the “Blank Space” singer is, too.

On the Internet, most website urls in the United States end in .com, .net, .edu, or .org, with the occasional .us or .biz thrown in there. (These endings are called generic top-level domains (or gTLDs if you’re in a hurry.) But as of June, there are going to be 547 new gTLDS, including .porn, .adult, and .sucks.

Many major brands are rushing to snap up those domain names before trolls or porn websites can buy them and use them. Microsoft, for example, now owns Office.porn and Office.adult.

And one of these smart cookies? Taylor Swift, who has bought TaylorSwift.porn and TaylorSwift.adult so that no trolls or pornographers can use them to their own ends.

It’s a smart move by Swift because it keeps her image within her control, and helps circumnavigate the problem that every young famous woman faces: a constant threat of nude photos of them, real or manufactured, leaking onto the web. This way, Swift prevents sexist trolls from exploiting her name for personal gain.

Swift made a similarly smart call when she was out on vacation with her pals from the band Haim and noticed a paparazzi taking photos of her and her friends. So she decided to pose for her own shot on Instagram to devalue the paparazzi shots.

“Okay, so they got pictures of us in our bikinis, like, I don’t want them to make like $100,000 for stalking us,” Swift told Lucky. “So we’re like, ‘Get up on the bow of the boat. We’re taking better bikini shots, so they don’t make as much money on theirs.’”
