Taylor Swift finally confirmed she’ll be in Cats—and announced which cat she’s playing

We’ve known for a while that Taylor Swift would be appearing in the upcoming Cats movie musical but today she finally confirmed the news and revealed who she’s playing. Drum-roll please….it’s Bombalurina! Cats fans are saying, “Okay, that checks out,” and non-musical-theater-nerds are like, “Who?” Let us explain.

Swift shared a selfie to Instagram posing next to her character’s name with a simple “Meow” as the caption. We had a hunch she’d play the role because Andrew Lloyd Webber (who wrote the original musical) teased it a few months ago.

“She’s going to play one or other of the ‘Macavity’ girls,” Webber told Vulture back in September 2018.

By “‘Macavity’ girls” he meant either Bombalurina or Demeter, who duet on the song, “Macavity the Mystery Cat.” Here’s a clip of Bombalurina’s solo in “Macavity the Mystery Cat” from the 1998 recording of the stage musical.

We’re curious which actress will play the Demeter to Swift’s Bombalurina, as these two cats are a couple of peas in a pod.

Swift joins Jennifer Hudson, James Corden, Idris Elba, Rebel Wilson, and Ian McKellen in the film. Hudson will play Grizabella, who sings the musical’s most recognizable song, “Memories,” but we don’t yet know which roles the rest of the cast will have.

The film is directed by Tom Hooper (Les Misérables and The King’s Speech), and it’s reportedly being filmed in the U.K. now.

Webber also told Vulture that Hooper really wanted Swift for the role and thought it was a fun bonus that she is also a big fan of cats, both the musical and the animals.
