Taylor Swift accepts Nikki Glaser’s apology for the comedian’s “asshat” comment that’s featured in Miss Americana
In her new Netflix documentary, Miss Americana, Taylor Swift relives her ascension to fame and all the ugliness that came with it. In one portion of the film, Swift recalls what it was like to hear critique from media personalities regarding her weight, persona, and musical talent. The film showed a clip of comedian and actress Nikki Glaser sharing her negative two cents about Swift. And now, five years later, Glaser has apologized to Swift for her comment, and Swift was more than willing to accept her apology.
“She’s too skinny. It bothers me,” Glaser said at the time. Swift explained to filmmakers how these kinds of comments, paired with paparazzi photos of herself, led to her developing an eating disorder and feeling the need to take time away from the public.
"I love @taylorswift. Unfortunately, I am featured in her new documentary as part of a montage of asshats saying mean things about her, which is used to explain why she felt the need to escape from the spotlight for a year. It’s insanely ironic because anyone who knows me knows I’m obnoxiously obsessed with her and her music," Glaser wrote in the caption of a February 1st Instagram post.
"The sound bite was from an interview I did 5 years ago and I say in SUCH a shitty tone, 'she’s too skinny; it bothers me... all of her model friends, and it’s just like, cmon!' This quote should be used as an example of 'projection' in PSYCH101 textbooks," she explained. "If you’re familiar with my 'work' at all, you know I talk openly about battling some kind of eating disorder for the past 17 years," Glaser wrote, adding that she was probably "feeling fat" and "jealous" on the day of that interview.
Glaser then wrote that people have made the same negative comments about her and her weight. She said she knows how “terrible” it feels to hear such comments when you’re “struggling.”
"I really have no need to post this other than to apologize to someone who seriously means SO much to me...I just hope this somehow gets to her so she knows I’m sorry for any pain I caused her," Glaser concluded.
Swift saw Glaser’s Instagram post, and reached out to show her appreciation for the apology.
"Wow," Swift commented on Glaser's Instagram. "I appreciate this so much and one of the major themes about the doc is that we have the ability to change our opinions over time, to grow, to learn about ourselves."
She continued, “I’m so sorry to hear that you’ve struggled with some of the same things I’ve struggled with. Sending a massive hug.”
At the end of the day, Swift is not about to hold a grudge for something that was said about her years ago. As she stated in Miss Americana, she’s all about growing up, adjusting her views, and speaking her truth. We love this for both her and Nikki Glaser.
Remember, people: Women supporting women is the name of the game.
