Taran Killam has some not nice words about that time Donald Trump was on “SNL”

In November 2015, just a few months after announcing his run for president Donald Trump hosted an episode of long-running NBC sketch series Saturday Night Live.

NBC and the hit series were *widely* criticized for the episode — which was one of the most watched episodes of the series in years but was generally viewed as unfunny — and now a former cast member is opening up about his experience working on the episode. And boy does it seem painful.

Longtime cast member Taran Killam, who left SNL over the summer of 2016, is currently promoting his new film Killing Gunther (which he wrote and directed), and he did not hold back when reminiscing about that episode.

In a recent NPR interview, Killam revealed that while he didn’t enjoy working on the episode, as time progresses, the experience, “grows more embarrassing and shameful.”

"We could hear the protests during our table read," Killam said during NPR's It's Been a Minute. "As we’re reading 40 mediocre sketches, we just hear, 'No Trump! Donald Trump!'...I am embarrassed, upon reflection, just because of how everyone was right. Every person outside of that building protesting was absolutely right."

The actor, who portrayed the New York businessman during his final SNL season on the show, including Trump’s episode, also called out the show’s hypocrisy in giving Trump a platform. He was the only candidate to host an episode while Democratic candidates Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton made brief appearances.

“It certainly feels like there’s some hypocrisy there. I guess you could say, ‘Oh, they’re righting wrongs.’ And I don’t even think it’s righting wrongs," Killam continued. "I think the show tries to — and in particular, Lorne’s outlook is — play to both sides. Play to the masses, play to whatever the popular opinion is. But, boy, they could definitely mine some comedy out of owning up to it, huh?

The Hamilton alum added that Trump was also not enjoyable to be around, revealing that there was never any common ground between Trump and the cast.

While Killam’s words may seem harsh, he definitely makes a great point. As much as we love tuning in to SNL, we are sometimes frustrated to see the series playing to both sides — and we can only imagine what it was like working on the episode since we were cringing from home.
