Attention ’90s kids: Tamagotchis are coming back, and they have some seriously cool new features

Sometimes, we miss the days when having a Tamagotchi was our biggest responsibility. The pocket pets were digital, but they still required a lot of attention—as anyone who accidentally killed theirs can attest. These days, most of us have enough on our plates with with work, bills, and rent. But if you’re nostalgic for a simpler time, you’ll be thrilled to learn that an updated version of the egg-shaped toy is coming in July.

In May, Bandai America announced the Tamagotchi On, a new, full-color version of the toy we all know and love. This iteration got an impressive facelift, including the addition of a full-color screen and the ability to connect with friends’ digital pets. While the ’90s version of the toy was pretty limited in its activities, this new edition introduces new features like mini games, shopping, and even the option for your Tama to get married. Tamagotchi On will come in four colors: Fairy Pink, Fairy Blue, Magic Purple, and Magic Green.

"The new experiences and social connections raises the fun-factor and provides users with endless hours of entertainment," Tara Badie, Bandai America Marketing Director, said in a press release. "We wanted to keep aspects of the original Tamagotchi gameplay but make it more relevant for today's users by adding a colored-digital screen, new ways to connect and millions of different characters."

Excited for your shot at Tamagotchi redemption?

Tamagotchi On will be available starting July 27th. You’ll be able to find it at Barnes and Noble, Target, GameStop, Urban Outfitters, Amazon, Books-A-Million, and EB Games.

We can’t wait to check out the Tamagotchi On for ourselves. With any luck, we’ll be able to keep it alive this time.
