T-Swift talks relationship anxiety, plays gorgeous acoustic version of ‘Out of the Woods’

One year ago this week, Taylor Swift dropped 1989 and gave us so many amazing songs, we’re still just as obsessed as we were all those months ago. Swift herself decided to mark the occasion with a clip from her recent performance at the Grammy Museum. In it, Swift sings an acoustic rendition of “Out of the Woods,” and it’s gorgeous.

“I’m going to play you a song that I wrote about a relationship that I was in that the number one feeling I felt in the whole relationship was anxiety, because it felt very fragile, it felt very tentative,” she says as introduction. “A lot of relationships can be very solid and that’s kind of what you hope for: solid and healthy. But that’s not what you always get. It doesn’t mean that it’s not special and extraordinary, just to have a relationship that’s fragile and somehow meaningful in that fragility.”

Part of what we love about Taylor’s songwriting is the way she bridges vulnerability and strength, meeting the ups and downs of love and life head-on.

In this performance, that willingness to probe the deepest corners of her own experiences is underlined by the both gentle and forceful piano accompaniment, provided by Swift herself. It’s nothing short of moving and inspiring.
