Meet the stylist using samurai swords and fire to cut hair
It’s no secret that we like to keep up to date with the latest hair trends here at HelloGiggles. Whether it’s glitter roots or macaron hair, we’re always down to try something new; and as a result, we spend a lot of time in the salon chair. But if you’re feeling just a little bit jaded by your salon experience lately, or maybe it seems like your haircut just isn’t extreme enough, we have just the stylist for you.
In a video posted by AJ+ earlier this week, Madrid-based hairstylist Alberto Olmedo shows off his unconventional techniques when it comes to cutting hair — and it’s absolutely mesmerizing. The video has already racked up over 125 million views, and it’s easy to see why: Wielding samurai swords and fire, a haircut with Olmedo looks more like an episode of Fear Factor than your typical, relaxing salon experience.
“I’m practically using primitive tools,” he says in the video. “Fire, swords. . . It’s a bit medieval. Sometimes you have to use a bit of your imagination to get positive results.”
Normally, the smell of burning hair is cause for concern at the salon; but in the case of Olmedo, it’s just a part of the deal. The flames and weaponry aren’t just for show, however: The stylist argues that his techniques allow for him to get a more even haircut, since he can cut both sides at once instead of going back and forth. Whether the resulting haircuts actually look more even is up for debate — but let’s just say these cuts are not for the faint of heart.
Of course, the whole thing is giving us major Edward Scissorhands vibes — especially given the fact that, at one point in the video, Olmedo attaches a few blades to his fingers and starts hacking away at a girl’s head. Check out the video for yourself below, and maybe let your hair mask soak an extra couple minutes tonight.
