We are swooning over Selena Gomez’s super daring look
Selena Gomez pulled off the unthinkable on Snapchat. In a world of neutrals and muted shadows of the moment, she went for the bolder than bold — red eyeshadow.
Aside from the fact that it’s such a powerful trend, scarlet shadow, which has also been sported by the likes of Lady Gaga and Soko, is just flat out hard to pull off. One false move and you can easily go from sultry to sickly.
Selena made her neon red shadow work by, well, treating it as if it were any other color. It’s heavily concentrated on the lip and completely blended out toward the brow. The cherry on top (see what I did there?) was the smudged, smoky effect on her lower lash line.
You’d think it would be overkill with a dramatic lash and a maroon lip, but nope. Selena magically delivered some real life editorial glam and I’m all about it.
At home tip: Start with your normal transitional color in your crease, then add a bit of a rust-colored red in the outer third, gently layering it over the transitional color. Use any light, iridescent shadow or a highlighter in your tear ducts and blend over the entire lid. Consider this your gateway into red shadows until you’re ready to go full throttle, à la Ms. Gomez.
