Your fave candy hearts won’t be available this Valentine’s Day, so you’ll have to be a little more direct with your crush

When you think of Valentine’s Day, it’s hard to imagine the holiday without candy—especially the heart-shaped variety. But if conversation hearts are your fave, you might want to start thinking about a backup…at least until next year.

Spangler Candy, the company responsible for bringing us treats like Dum-Dums lollipops, announced in a press release this week that since it acquired Sweethearts and Necco Wafers (which produced the candy conversation hearts for decades) from Necco’s bankruptcy, the factory is still being renovated. This means that Sweethearts will skip a year, relaunching in time for Valentine’s Day 2020.

“There are a lot of manufacturing challenges and unanswered questions at this point, and we want to make sure these brands meet consumer expectations when they re-enter the market,” Spangler CEO Kirk Vashaw said in a statement. “We look forward to announcing the Sweethearts relaunch for the 2020 Valentine season, and hope to reintroduce Necco Wafers to the marketplace in 2019.”

As Today.com pointed out, you may still find the candy on shelves if it was manufactured before July 2018, which is when the original factory shut down. So if you see a bag, you might want to snag it—because it seems like they’re going to be a rarity this year. Today.com did warn that if the candy you get is sticky or grainy, it’s better just to toss it because it may have gone sideways.

It’s hard to imagine Valentine’s Day without those yummy little hearts with phrases like “BE MINE” on them, but there are still tons of candies out there for you to enjoy this year. Maybe Valentine’s Day 2019 is the year we all find our new favorite? The possibilities are endless.
