Another Reason Susan Sarandon Rocks
Just when we thought Susan Sarandon couldn’t get any cooler, she blows our mind again. As you probably already know, the Oscar-winning actress co-owns SPiN, a super cool ping pong franchise found in a bunch of major cities. What you may not know is that June is Men’s Health Month. So what happens when you mix the two? Blue balls.
Yep, you read that correctly. As part of a month-long initiative to help raise awareness of preventable health problems and early detection and treatment of disease among men, Sarandon and SPiN announced they’re turning all their ping pong balls blue for the month. What a cool (and cheeky!) way to get attention on the right issue.
For every party who serves up the “Blue Ball Special” at their locations in New York, Los Angeles, Toronto and Dubai, SPiN will make a donation to the Testicular Cancer Society. “One guy, every hour, every day is diagnosed with testicular cancer,” says Mike Craycraft, Founder of the Testicular Cancer Society, which provides education about the disease and support for fighters and survivors. “SPiN’s role in provoking conversation is exactly what we need to overcome that moment of awkwardness, potentially saving lives.”
That’s not all: Sarandon and SPiN will also donate one dollar for every photo of a blue ball posted with the hashtag #SPiNBlueBalls on Instagram or Twitter.
This isn’t the first time the influential actress has used her star power to help others and raise awareness about issues she cares about. She received the Action Against Hunger Humanitarian Award in 2006 and was appointed an FAO Goodwill Ambassador in 2010. “I am proud to help draw everyone’s attention to the very real and dramatic problems of hunger, food insecurity and extreme poverty,” she said when named an ambassador. She’s also an advocate for victims of hunger and HIV/AIDS and a spokesperson for Heifer International. Did we mention she’s a brilliant actress? Yeah, she rocks.
