Women are covering Susan B. Anthony’s gravestone in “I Voted” stickers, we’re crying
So! You’ve been crying all through election season because it’s been rough, rough, rough. Don’t worry, us too. Today, though, we’re happy to bring you a story that’s guaranteed to induce happy tears (because we all need a change).
Right now, women are placing “I Voted” stickers all over Susan B. Anthony’s grave in Rochester, New York. They do this every year because the famed suffragette was never able to vote legally in her lifetime, but it’s a particularly special gesture in 2016 because: For the first time in our nation’s history, women are placing those stickers on Anthony’s grave to say they voted for a woman president.
Anthony was arrested on November 8th, 1872 for casting an illegal ballot in a presidential election, so it makes sense that women pay homage to her and show their gratitude each election cycle by placing these stickers on her grave.
However, this year’s influx of women honoring Anthony is so unprecedented that Mt. Hope Cemetery, where Anthony is buried, announced it will stay open until the polls close at 9 p.m. on Election Day (it usually closes at 5:30 p.m.)
