In very surprising news, “Gilmore Girls” is NOT the most popular Netflix original — here’s what is

Netflix has been serving up so much TV goodness between its groundbreaking original content and its revivals of beloved TV shows past. Now, the numbers are in: based on ratings, Gilmore Girls is Netflix’s third biggest 2016 show. Obviously, we’ve been obsessing over the Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life since well before it dropped on November 25th. Pictures from the set had us analyzing every detail. Now we’re stuck on those last four words and (spoiler alert) the father of Rory’s unborn child.

Obviously, Gilmore Girls may be first in our hearts, but two other shows beat it out in terms of viewers. One of them is another much-anticipated revival that snagged Netflix’s top spot of the year. According to Symphony Advanced Media, which has been keeping an eye on the Netflix numbers, just shy of 5 million viewers between the ages of 18 and 49 have watched the Gilmore Girls revival in its entirety. In normal broadcast terms, that’s about a 3.6 rating.

Of course, regular broadcast terms also use the 18-49 age group to denote a key advertising demographic, and Netflix doesn’t have ads. So, in these terms, we just have to think of it as a large portion of the TV audience. This audience, who binged Gilmore Girls within the first three days of its release, is large – but not large enough.

Dying to know the two 2016 releases that beat Gilmore Girls? One was Season 4 of Orange is the New Black; the other was Fuller House. OINTB snagged 5.8 million viewers in its first 3 days, while Fuller House boasts a whopping 7.3 million.

This data is still preliminary, and Netflix doesn’t officially recognize it. Regardless, it confirms something we already knew: Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life is a hit. It also reveals that the reboot beat out the likes of Daredevil Season 2, and Luke Cage – which, despite breaking the Internet, only did about 3.4 million.

Though, strangely, if the standings of these top 5 Netflix shows are based solely on the first episode (or the first episode of the season for the shows that returned), both Marvel series actually beat out Gilmore Girls. Either way, though, those three along with OITNB and Fuller House are Netflix’s most watched shows of 2016.

We’d love to see how  a *second* season of A Year in the Life would do, ratings-wise. Guess we’ll just have to pray to the TV gods that we’ll get one!
