The centenarian who openly supported Hillary Clinton has passed away

We have some sad news to report. The 103-year-old woman who supported Hillary Clinton has passed away, and our hearts are breaking. Ruline Steininger went viral for her support of the first female presidential candidate, and it’s very clear why.

Not only was Steininger incredibly likable, she was a lifelong fighter for women’s rights.

She was determined to witness history and help elect the first female president of the United States.

"I've got a big job ahead of me...I've got to live," Steininger said before the election. "After that, OK, I can die if I want to, but I'm going to live until she's elected."

Unfortunately, we all know how that turned out. But Steininger never stopped fighting, and apparently, never will stop fighting.

She had a long and productive life and did much to inspire many women, young and old," her granddaughter, Karen Steininger, said in an email according to CNN. "One of my favorite things that she said, as my husband was telling her about the Women's March here in Des Moines, was to please send Hillary a note after her death and to let her know that she'll still be fighting. An activist even after she's gone."

Clinton tweeted her condolences:

Steininger was born in 1913, seven years before women gained the right to vote. She grew up during a time when women couldn’t be doctors, lawyers, scientists, activists or president. They had two choices: Either be a school teacher or a nurse.

Women certainly have come a long way since that time. Even though Steininger wasn’t able to witness the country’s first female president, everything she stood for will live on in all of us. We, too, won’t ever stop fighting.
