Because you should know what superheroes look like as classic Flemish portraits
Today in awesome Internet art: your favorite superheroes reimagined as Flemish paintings. From a forlorn Captain America, to a ruffle-collared Cat Woman (with a similarly adorned feline), to a starch suited R2-D2, the images take the heroes and villains we’ve known our whole lives and give them a little tweaking. I mean, check out the pantaloons on the Hulk!
These online treasures are actually photographs, not paintings, but they capture the sophistication and stoicism of oil painting with just the perfect amount of quirk. French photographer Sacha Goldberger captured the heroic portraits by posing two-dozen cosplayers in grand, Flemish tradition. The series, “Super-Flemish,” premiered at the Grand Palais in Paris last weekend accompanied with this description:
“What if Superman was born in the sixteenth century? And what if the Hulk was a Duke? How might Van Eyck have portrayed Snow White? Sacha’s discovery of these characters, which goes back to childhood, gave birth to a desire to re-appropriate them, to take them back to a time forming the cornerstone of modern western art.”
Well kudos Sacha, I don’t think we’ll ever be able to watch a superhero movie the same way again.
