The 2017 Sundance Film Festival arrivals were a lesson in how to style gorgeous coats

If the wet and the wind haven’t informed you enough already; it’s officially coat season. Sounds boring? We swear it’s not — just ask Jamie King, Jenny Slate and Carey Mulligan—who spiced up their Sundance Film Festival arrival with some epic coats. Adding a coat to your ensemble is so simple and so elegant, not to mention it’s also sooo Park City, Utah in January. The temps were low but the looks were warm and graceful as stars continued right onto the red carpets for photo ops in the winter gear. We collected a few of our favorite shots just to demonstrate how Hollywood that extra layer can be.

Chilly or not, sometimes the big fancy overcoat is the way to go.

Look who it is, Elle Fanning bringing the cape-coat to Sundance in a big way. So elegant, and with that edgy leather underneath; this is Elle in true form. Blush pink on the outside, rocker chick on the inside.

Sal Velez and America Fererra

Actors Sal Velez and Superstore superstar America Ferrera know not to hit the coat check before posing for pics. America’s bomber jacket is serving athletic and floral and some much needed insulation all at once.

How cute is snowbunny Leslie Mann in her pom-pom embellished winter coat? Sometimes even a cute cropped puffer jacket can say so much!

This is where things start to get important, people. Roxanne Shanté performed in the snow in this insanely epic Disney-inspired faux-fur leopard coat. The biopic Roxanne Roxanne premiered at Sundance this year, spotlighting the life and career of the prolific hip-hop pinoeer, so yeah, it’s safe to show up and steal the show however you know how.

Jamie King looks like a vintage Barbie in her furry pink coat. Can we just gush over this look for a sec? The warm wooly suit underneath, the metallic bootie. This is winter-glam at it’s finest.

Brooklyn Decker
Brooklyn Decker

Brooklyn Decker is glowing in black and white (down to the sneaks!) as she arrives to support her film Lovesong, a road-trip movie with a super inspiring story and a mostly female cast.

Gwendoline Christie

Gwendoline Christine stepped out of Westeros to come to Sundance in this long length white fur coat. While we’re hoping it’s faux (please!), we can’t get past the silky pajamas that we’re prettty sure are buried underneath. Was this the kind of smart thinking that scored her a part in the new Star Wars sequels?

Tavi Gevinson and Abbi Jacobson

They are writers, they are actresses, they are creators, they are ..owning these oversized androgynous coats. Good on ya, Tavi Gevinson and Abbi Jacobson. We knew we liked your style.

Look how sweet Jenny Slate looks wrapped in this gorgeous ankle length coat. The actress and comedian let her natural curls fly free as she too embraced a stark and edgy black and white palette. So crisp.

When in doubt, stay neutral — take it from Carey Mulligan, who did anything but blend in on the red carpet in this timeless camel coat. She paired the layer with some tall black suede boots and a chunky cowl neck sweater, proving that comfy, warm and chic are all doable at the same time.

So there’s our round up! Will you be keeping your floor-sweeping coats on at your next big event? Think about it before you toss your winter layers onto the towering “coat bed” at your pal’s parties this weekend. Warm has never looked so good on you.
