10 Summer Songs I’m So NOT Over Yet
I went into summer all about basically EVERY SONG on the radio. And then June became July and July became August and I heard some songs 50 kajillion times and for some songs, that was about a kajillion times too many. So there are some summer songs I am now, sadly, super over, like when they come on the radio, I frantically flip around stations and stay far away from the station playing the dreaded song, even if the other stations are playing really annoying Jack in the Box and State Farm commercials. That said, there are some summer songs I don’t think I’m EVER going to get over, I could listen a kajillion-kajillion times to certain songs and still probably be good. Summer may be winding down by my complete and utter devotion to these summer jams will live on for eternity, or at least through the month September.
1. “Am I Wrong” – Nico and Vinz
I’m not over this song yet (it’s that “yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah” chorus, I have so much fun singing along with it every time), but I’ll admit I’m getting ready for Nico and Vinz, to make chart-topper number two, please and thank you!
2. “Problem” – Ariana Grande feat. Iggy Azalea
I keep being ready to be over this song, but I’m not yet! I think it’s the horns section. I love that horns section. I also love Mariah Carey Ariana Grande. Every time I listen to this song, I think it’s a response to Jay Z’s “99 Problems” and that cracks me up inside.
3. “Stay With Me”- Sam Smith
I want to be over this song. I think it’s so emotionally manipulative, and yet I’m not, I’m hungry for my slow jams, and this has that Boyz II Men/Savage Garden overkill sincerity I miss from the late ’90s.
4. “Summer” – Calvin Harris
I’m getting over it, but again, not quite there yet, like if I haven’t heard this song for a few days and it comes on the radio, I’m still a happy-ish camper.
5. “Maps” – Maroon 5
I can’t respond to Adam Levine’s work in an unbiased manner. It’s all the things he does with his chair on The Voice and how intently he looks at contestants when they’re singing. It’s too sexy, I can’t. I like this song, I don’t know if it’s for the right reasons, but I like it, whatever, all the shrugs in the world.
6. “Boom Clap” – Charlie XCX
I WILL NEVER GET TIRED OF THIS SONG NEVER EVER. I scream whenever it comes on the radio. It’s a quiet scream, but nevertheless, a veritable scream. Charlie, make me 10 more pop hits and make them for me now!
7. “Love Runs Out” – OneRepublic
I think this is the sassiest song of the summer (Ariana Grande with her one-less-problem is pretty flipping sassmatass), and I love jamming out to it. I can listen to this song probably 500 more times before I start getting pissed.
8. “Really Don’t Care” – Demi Lovato
I like this song and I’m not even the target going-through-a-bad-breakup demo. I’ve been a Dems fan since Camp Rock (my talent-show-talent is doing a dead-on Demi doing big finale “This Is Me”) and I will be Team Demi ’til the end.
9. “Chandelier” – Sia
I’m so glad Sia (who originally wrote this song for Rihanna and it SHOWS) decided to keep this song for herself. It’s so good and I feel so deep and meaningful when I sing along even though I’m still not a hundred percent clear what the chandelier is supposed to be a metaphor for. The mystery makes me feel all the more deep and meaningful!
10. “Bailando” – Enrique Iglesias feat. Sean Paul
Favorite song of the summer. Best song of the summer. Why is this all the way down at #20 on the hit list? And can one person listening to a song over and over again singlehandedly move it up the charts? Let me know, please and thank you.
