We might have a hint as to who’s the Big Bad in ‘Suicide Squad’
Usually, when we think of recent superhero film villains, they tend to be brooding, uber-masculine men. (To be fair, those tend to be our superheroes as well.) But for the upcoming Suicide Squad film, though we have plenty of details on the extraordinary, colorful cast of villains-turned-heroes, we don’t really have any information as to who’ll be playing the Big Bad — sure, Jared Leto’s Joker won’t be a good guy, but he’s also rumored to only be in the film for a little bit.
Well, the Internet sure has ideas as to who’s the main troublemaker in the movie, but the answer is somebody that we sure weren’t expecting. None other than Enchantress, played by Cara Delevingne, is being rumored as the antagonist in Suicide Squad. For her part, she hasn’t suggested that she’s at all different from anyone else in the cast squad; after all, her many set Instagrams suggests that she’s just one of the (reformed evil) gals.
The fuel behind the rumors come from the film’s trailer, which features a lot of dialogue from Viola Davis’s Amanda Waller and Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn and then a lot of group shots of the Squad all together. But a lot of observant folks have noticed that in all of Delevingne’s shots, her Enchantress is by herself (with the exception of this shot), and while nobody in the film is looking super cheerful, Enchantress in particular looks quite grim.
According to ScreenCrush, this character twist aligns with what fans of another comic book franchise might recognize: “In the comics, the character begins as June Moone, an artistic type who discovers an evil entity in a mysterious chamber and absorbs its power, becoming Enchantress. But it’s not long before June realizes that she and the entity are not exactly one — in fact, the evil being is a separate entity and one that is almost impossible to control, similar to Jean Grey’s Phoenix persona.” Jean Grey’s Phoenix became the Big Bad in X-Men: The Last Stand, but she eventually rejoined the main group; here’s hoping Moone’s similarly tortured Enchantress does the same, while Delevingne gets some serious screen time as a superhero villainess.
