‘Suicide Squad’ fans are trying to shut down Rotten Tomatoes because of a bad review

Fans of DC Comics rally hard for the things they love, and in this case, it’s the new movie Suicide Squad. The movie, which stars Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Will Smith, Viola Davis, and Ike Barinholtz, unfortunately didn’t fare well with early viewers and critics, and certain fans are a bit outraged. Instead of petitioning their own friends to go and support the movie, they chose a bigger obstacle — to shut down Rotten Tomatoes. As you might know, RottenTomatoes.com is one of the biggest review aggregators, and the best place to go to see how newly released films have been ranked by top critics.

While Suicide Squad officially hits theaters on August 5th, reviewers aren’t really happy with what they’ve seen — currently, the film ranks at a 33%, which is considered rotten.

A fan named Abdullah Coldwater from Egypt decided to take matters into his own hands, creating a Change.Org petition to remove the entire website. Coldwater states that the website has been especially harsh towards DC films, mentioning that Batman v. Superman: Dawn Of Justice was also unfairly torn apart. (For the record, it’s currently sitting at a 27% rating on the site.)

The petition currently has over 10,000 signatures.

Is this ridiculous? Well, a bit. While it’s good to know that the film (which again, has yet to be released) has such a passionate fanbase, it’s also a little ridiculous to try and shut down such a helpful and non-offensive website based on disagreement.

It’s also possible that Coldwater doesn’t realize that these reviewers don’t actually work for Rotten Tomatoes — the website just pulls the reviews, which come from multiple sources, and makes them available on one page to summarize the overall reaction to the film.

In short, while we love freedom of expression, there’s a good chance that this petition won’t make it very far.
