Sufjan Stevens wrote a song for Tonya Harding, in case you’d like to cry about ice skating today

The crazy saga of Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan captured the public consciousness in 1994, and it’s had a surprising resurgence in the last few years. Now, musician Sufjan Stevens has released a song about Tonya Harding, so you’ll need to pencil in crying over ice skating with your afternoon coffee.

The song is literally called “Tonya Harding,” and it’s *extremely* Sufjan Stevens.

By “it’s extremely Sufjan Stevens” we mean it’s really good, impossibly sad, and is probably going to haunt you for some time. (Honestly, we’re still so affected by his Call Me By Your Name songs. Looking at you, “Mystery of Love”!)

Now, Sufjan Stevens isn’t the first person to write an anthem about Tonya Harding. Seattle’s Tacocat released a song called “Sk8 or Die” a few years ago, and the album art is literally a picture of skaters Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan. (Is anyone working on a compilation album of Tonya Harding-themed songs yet? ?Free idea alert?)

Songs about the 1994 ice skating scandal aren’t the only Harding-themed things people have enjoyed in the last few years. Not too long ago, a museum dedicated to Harding and Kerrigan popped up. And early reviews of upcoming film I, Tonya praise Margot Robbie’s performance as the infamous skater.

Because the story is having such a resurgence right now (although, let’s be real, the scandal never really left the public eye), it would honestly be weird if Sufjan Stevens didn’t write a poignant, catchy tribute to the former best female ice skater on Earth.
