Sufjan Stevens just did a ‘Hotline Bling’ cover, complete with Drake dance moves
Sufjan Stevens has already given the world so much: new lyrics to ‘The Star-Spangled Banner,’ a Christmas-themed hip-hop mixtape, a whole song about Flint, Michigan and multiple winged outfits.
As if that wasn’t more than enough, now we can add “part-time Drake impersonator” to his extensive indie resume.
During a Halloween performance in Jersey City, Sufjan (with some solid support from Gallant) covered Drake’s ubiquitous ‘Hotline Bling.’ This wasn’t just a cover, though — Sufjan went all out, copying some of Drake’s unmistakeable dance moves in front of a screen showing photos of the Canadian rapper and images from the video.
In its quest to take over the world, ‘Hotline Bling’ has inspired an endless stream of memes and has already been covered by at least 72% of all other singers, from Erykah Badu to Justin Bieber to Disclosure and Sam Smith (not to mention this awesome version in Spanish!). While some of those versions are almost as catchy as the original, no other one to date has involved a tribute to Drake’s one-of-a-kind dance moves. We can only hope that this expert-level trolling will inspire a Drake cover of ‘The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades is Out to Get Us!’ in time for Christmas.
